Q: What is a doula?

A: The word "doula" comes from the Greek word meaning "most important female slave," the woman who probably helped the lady of the house through childbearing. The word has come to refer to a "woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth." (Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, Mothering the Mother).

Q: What does a doula do?

A: A doula does a lot! They offer prenatal education about pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding for both mothers and their partners.

Doulas provide CONTINUOUS labor support for a mother and her partner. This is huge in today's birthing-world. Mothers are left alone for long periods of time in the hospital to labor alone. Doctors, due to time contraints, only arrive to catch the baby.

Doulas offer information for parents to make INFORMED decisions regarding their care. It's your body, your baby and doulas help you get the information you need to KNOW what is best for you all.

Doulas are well-trained in comfort measures in labor. Whether you want medication or not, doulas are able to offer you a myriad of options to get OPTIMUM comfort, whatever that means to you.

Doulas help maximize the partner's experience as well. There is a lot of pressure on partners to do the right thing for their sweethearts in labor. It's difficult to always know what that is, so doulas help partners help moms. Doulas do not take away from the intimacy in sucha  partnership, instead they are trained to help ENHANCE it.

Doulas are not doctors. They are not midwives. They are there to offer emotional and physical support for moms and partners.

A doula DOES NOT perform medical care in anyway. They do not deliver babies, perform vaginal exams, or take fetal heart tones.

Q: Why do I need a doula?

A: First, visit the
Benefits page for the research to back up using a doula. Second, doula are there to ENHANCE your experience and that of your partner. We are not interested in taking over the role of partner, or doctor, or mother. It's YOUR birth. The point of a doula is 1. Inform you so you can make educated decisions 2. Support you 100% in your choices. 3. Aid your partner in enhancing their role, so BOTH of you can have the birth of your dreams.

Q: How much does a doula cost?

A: The charge for Hospital doula services is $600. Homebirths are $500. A deposit is required and payment in full is required on your estimated due date. In your initial visit, we'll discuss your payment options. Please don't allow the money to stop you from having a doula. If you truly can not afford the fee, contact me. There may be something we can do.

Q: What does The Complete Doula Package include?

You can see the whole break down of the package here.

Q: What kind of payments do you accept?

Cash, check or credit/debit cards via paypal. I have a paypal link on the Store page. Scroll to the bottom.

Q: When will I see my doula?

A: I offer a free interview and consulation. After that, if you choose to hire me, there can be up to three prenatal appointments to discuss important concerns for your labor and delivery. I try to schedule the LAST prenatal at 36-37 weeks, and then we will work backwards from there. Usually, I come to your home for our meetings (unless you want to meet elsewhere). These prenatal meetings are usually one-two hours each.

I will be present for the labor and birth of your baby (when you call)  and also do 1-2 post-partum vists.

Q: What should I ask a potential doula?

A: You can visit DONA's page on hiring a doula for interview questions and tips. Just remember it's YOUR interview. You want to know she's a good fit. So, what do you see her role as? What is your vision for your birth? You want her to enhance your experience. If you don't "click" than keep looking. There is a doula for everyone.

Q: Does insurance cover doula fees?

A: Rarely, but sometimes. :) Check with your individual insurance carriers about reimbursement. Doulas often help their clients achieve a natural childbirth, which saves you money on your insurance payments. Natural childbirth is cheaper than a medicated birth.

Some of my clients have had success using their flexible spending accounts to pay for doula services. After hiring me, we can discuss the best ways to pay.
